Aaron Rodgers is taking his time to decide whether he will continue for another year with the Pittsburgh Steelers or if he will retire from the NFL and dedicate himself to his personal life and the things he enjoys doing.
Time moves forward and never stops. Because of that, the franchise continues with its foot on the accelerator, searching for new weapons to add to the roster so it can rebuild heading into the 2026 season.
For that reason, Mike McCarthy has his sights set on several players who will help him build a better version of the team that was handed to him by Mike Tomlin. During this free agency period, he continues evaluating and securing prospects who can join the organization.
The Pittsburgh Steelers add talent to their roster
With the official opening of free agency this past Wednesday, March 11, 2026, the new league year began and with it Mike McCarthy quickly went to work adding two new players.
The Steelers’ new additions fill roles on special teams and the offensive line. While they continue waiting to learn Rodgers’ decision, the coaching staff keeps moving forward with roster construction.
According to several reports, it was revealed that the player who will reinforce the special teams unit is punter Cameron Johnston, along with offensive tackle Jack Driscoll.
The AFC North franchise signed its punter to a one-year contract. For Johnston, it will be his second stint in Pittsburgh, hoping to deliver a much better outcome than his first experience with the team.
The punter is 34 years old, and the first time he signed with the Steelers was in 2024 on a three-year, $9 million deal. On that occasion, the player only appeared in one game that season before suffering an injury that ruled him out of any possibility of continuing in action.
The following year he returned to training camp, but everything had changed, as Corliss Waitman kept the job, forcing Johnston to leave the organization.
Because of that situation, he had to look for opportunities elsewhere, which led him to move between different teams.
- Buffalo Bills
- New York Giants
Those were the franchises he spent time with during that year. The punter has also been part of other teams:
- Philadelphia Eagles 2017
- Houston Texans 2021
These are Johnston’s career totals:
- 428 punts
- 21,622 yards
- 47.2 yards per punt
- 42.0 yards net average
- 185 punts inside the 20-yard line
- 67 punts inside the 10-yard line
