The Los Angeles Lakers have spent much of the past two decades relying on the brilliance of LeBron James to generate offense through a mix of scoring and elite playmaking.
This season, however, that responsibility has increasingly shifted to Luka Doncic, whose high-scoring, high-assist performances have become the engine driving the team’s offense.
Doncic‘s impact has been especially evident in games where he dominates both as a scorer and a facilitator. The Slovenian guard is averaging 32.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 8.5 assists this season, numbers that reflect the type of all-around production once expected primarily from James. When Doncic is controlling the pace, creating shots and distributing the ball, the Lakers’ chances of winning rise significantly.
The Lakers are relying heavily on Luka
That dual responsibility has made him central to the team’s identity. Los Angeles is relying heavily on his ability to generate offense for himself while also creating opportunities for teammates. Much like James did for years in Los Angeles and earlier in his career, Doncic is serving as the primary playmaker who dictates how the offense flows.
The statistical production reinforces that role. Luka currently leads the NBA in scoring and appears well positioned to maintain that lead through the end of the season. Even his slowest scoring stretch has not slowed his overall pace. In February, he averaged 27 points per game, which was actually his lowest monthly scoring average of the year.
That brief dip did not last long. Doncic opened March with a surge, highlighted by a 44-point performance against the Indiana Pacers. The outburst was another example of how quickly he can take over games offensively, while still maintaining the playmaking responsibilities that keep the Lakers‘ offense balanced.
A case for the MVP
Those types of performances have strengthened his case in the race for the NBA Most Valuable Player Award. With the Lakers depending heavily on his production and Doncic maintaining one of the highest scoring averages in the league, his name continues to appear prominently in MVP discussions.
His ability to combine scoring dominance with near-elite assist numbers also highlights how much the team’s offensive structure revolves around him. While the Lakers still have experienced veterans and multiple scoring options, Doncic is the player who consistently creates advantages for the entire roster.
The shift has effectively mirrored the role James held for much of his career in Los Angeles. For years, the Lakers relied on LeBron to orchestrate the offense, push the pace and produce the kind of stat lines that combined 30-point scoring with double-digit assist potential. Doncic is now filling that space, doing it with a similar blend of scoring aggression and creative passing.
