The mood in the Mets camp is not the best, as the team went on vacation early after being eliminated from the postseason by the Cincinnati Reds. Despite acquiring Juan Soto, one of the best hitters in the league, for a record $765 million before 2024, the New York Mets did not live up to expectations and are already working to renew the team to avoid repeating this failure.

After the poor campaign, Mets owner Steve Cohen is already thinking about adding a new player who can adapt to the team and especially to its star player, Juan Soto. Although the budget is not the best, the team already has a name in mind that could fit very well into the scheme and everything indicates that they will go for him with all their resources.

The signing the Mets are asking for to play with Soto

Considering the low budget, the Mets are thinking about free agency and the name that resonates strongly is veteran Kyle Schwarber. The outfielder is coming off a very good season with the Phillies, leading the National League with 56 home runs and 132 runs batted in (RBI), as well as reaching career highs in several offensive categories.

With 23 home runs in the postseason (the third most in MLB history in less than 100 games), Schwarber is the playoff factor Cohen needs to ensure that the investment in Soto and the team finally pays off in a World Series. The signing is more than necessary and the team’s fans are also starting to put pressure on him, as given the poor results, signing Schwarber seems to be an obligation.

Juan Soto’s disappointment after Mets failure

After the Mets’ failure, not only Cohen and the fans were disappointed after a big investment, but also the team’s star, Juan Soto, was very upset with the team’s performance and explained what the obligation should be every year.

“It’s a failure. Every time you don’t make the playoffs or don’t win a championship, it’s a failure. That’s how we’re going to look at it, and that’s how we’re going to approach things in the offseason,” Soto explained at the time to the media.

With the fans upset by a poor campaign and their star player disappointed, Cohen knows he has to find a way to sign a new partner for Soto and restore the fans’ enthusiasm in order to achieve the objectives and not repeat another failure.
