Defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa recently re-signed with the , agreeing to a massive four-year, $80 million contract.

With Odighizuwa returning for the 2025 season, a defensive tackle who attacks the opposing quarterback may not seem like a major need, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t look for one, especially when there is some flexibility at the position

The best option for the Cowboys on a silver platter

This is the case of Jonathan Allen, who during his eight years with the Washington Commanders has worked as a defensive end and tackle.

Allen, who was the 17th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, was recently released by the Commanders and became a free agent, after playing only eight games in 2024 due to injury (torn left pectoral muscle), and had 19 tackles and three quarterback sacks.

If the Cowboys decide to go for Allen, it would be a positive change. In 2024, Washington hired former Dallas defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as head coach, and quickly began hiring former Cowboys players.

Quinn brought in Dorance Armstrong, Tyler Biadasz and Dante Fowler Jr., who proved to be key during the Commanders’ run to the NFC Championship Game.

Now, the Cowboys could choose someone who played for Quinn and turn the interior of their line into a strength in the process.

Allen was entering the final year of his contract with a $15.5 million base salary and no more guaranteed money remaining, and by releasing Allen, Washington saves $16.3 million in salary cap space.

In eight seasons with Washington, Allen recorded 42 quarterback sacks in 108 starts. Prior to last season, Allen had been a very consistent player, missing a total of three games.
