The New Orleans Saints are now in a big mess with their quarterback spot for the 2025 NFL season. This comes after the shock step back of past main player Derek Carr. With no set next man, the team is looking at some choices, including maybe getting Cleveland Browns quarterback Kenny Pickett.
Carr, after tossing over 6,000 yards and 40 touchdowns in just 20 games for the Saints, said he was done in May. He had just had shoulder surgery done that would have kept him out all season.
Rather than stay on the team and get paid, Carr decided to stop playing for good. This left the Saints without a tested leader.
New kid on the blocks?
After Carr left, the Saints are trying out new quarterback Tyler Shough, who they picked in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. While Shough has had some good moments in practice, experts think he might have a tough first year.
“Tyler Shough needs to look like the quarterback of the future, or he’s got to be a complete dumpster fire,” said NFL pro, Albert Breer, showing the big gamble in the Saints’ current quarterback plan.
Shough is set to go up against second-year quarterback Jake Haener and past South Carolina star Spencer Rattler, but no one is yet a top pick. The lack of experienced talent is a big worry for the team, creating a situation thar makes them look for help.
Kenny Pickett in sight
It seems head coach Kellen Moore wants the team to look at a more seasoned option, and Kenny Pickett has come up as a possible swap choice. Pickett now plays for the Browns but is low on the list that has Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, Shedeur Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel.
With the Browns set to cut their quarterback list before the season, Pickett, who is in the last year of his first deal and makes a low $2.6 million, might be a good buy. For the Saints, he’s a low-risk, big-win choice who can either lead or help Shough.
A key time for everyone
The Saints’ quarterback trouble comes at a key time. After long tries for a steady hand since Drew Brees departure, the team must find a way again. Whether they back Shough or bring in a vet like Pickett, their choice will direct the 2025 season, and maybe what the team’s high spehere do next.
Training will be key in seeing which way the Saints go. If Shough has a hard start, expect more conversations regarding a trade. For now, the only certain thing in New Orleans is the uncertainty.
