Once Cam Skattebo‘s injury became official, the Giants began searching for a backup running back, and they’d reportedly found one by now. Losses have been a concern for the team, as Rushawn Baker has also joined the list of players who will be sidelined for a while.

Skattebo missed the final part of the spring’s organized team activities and mandatory minicamp due to an undisclosed ailment. He was set to go to training camp, but the team then put him on hold again, and the rookie missed a couple of days of practice last week.

Jonathan Ward could join the Giants for the 2025 NFL season

The man who could replace Skattebo would be Jonathan Ward, who will be scouted by the Giants this week to see his physical performance. Due to the severe shortage of running backs in New York, Ward isn’t the only one who would be invited to be tested at the team’s training camp.

Ward has been bouncing around the NFL since signing as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in 2020. The team subsequently released him on November 22, and he then signed with the Jets’ practice squad. He spent the remainder of the 2022 season with the Titans, initially signing with their practice squad, and last year played with the Steelers.

In 46 career games, Ward has rushed for 91 yards on 22 carries (4.1 yards per carry), along with six receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown. He has also returned two kickoffs for 42 yards and recorded 18 special teams tackles.

What happened to Cam Skattebo and when will he return to New York?

Last week, Skattebo was scheduled to participate in limited matches. Although he was expected to fully participate in Friday’s practice, Skattebo left the field early. At the time, it was unclear what the young rookie running back was suffering from. It was eventually revealed that a hamstring injury was affecting him.

The good news is that Skattebo is reportedly improving. Tests on his left leg came back positive. The team plans to see how quickly he can recover without risking further problems. Given that hamstring injuries tend to linger, the Giants must be extremely cautious.
