The Mexican national team began its training camp in the United States ahead of its FIFA friendly matches against Japan and South Korea. While Javier Aguirre’s team was beginning work in Oakland, California, a security incident directly affected members of the coaching staff.
According to reports from Televisa, a group of unidentified people forced one of the vans transporting Mexican team material and stole a trunk with equipment destined for the training sessions. Although it has not been confirmed exactly what items were stolen, it is known that the contents were an essential part of the physical and tactical work of the squad.
Insecurity in Oakland affects Mexican national team and media
The incident occurred in downtown Oakland, an area that has been singled out for its high crime rate. According to journalist Gibran Araige, a media outlet covering Mexico was also the victim of a robbery, as was the Mexican national team, although in neither case was there any direct violence.
In the case of the media outlet, it was reported that individuals broke the windows of their vehicle, although there were no valuables inside. In both cases, they were quick and non-violent robberies, but they raised alarms about the security conditions around the national team.
When is Mexico vs Japan?
Despite this incident, El Tri continues its preparations for its friendly match against Japan, scheduled for this Friday, September 6 at 20:00 hours (Mexico City time). This match is part of the FIFA Date window and is the beginning of Javier Aguirre’s rehearsals for the 2026 World Cup.
Subsequently, on Tuesday, September 9 at 19:00 hours (Mexico City time), it will be the second meeting of these matches against Asian teams, against South Korea at Geodis Park in Nashville, Tennessee.
Although the start of the tour of the United States was not ideal, the Mexican team remains focused on sporting matters and its priority now is to consolidate the group ahead of upcoming international challenges and minimize any distractions generated by external situations.
