As a series of explosions in Abu Dhabi and Dubai led to temporary airspace closures, multiple tennis stars like Coco Gauff, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner have used their platforms to send a message of humanity, safety, and concern for the affected innocent lives before addressing anything related to their future.
The UAE’s Aviation Authority was forced to suspend flights shorty after the conclusion of the 2026 Dubai Tennis Championships due to attack threats urgency in the country. One of those affected by it was Russian players Daniil Medvedev (the 2026 Dubai winner) and Andrey Rublev.
Coco Gauff: “Unnecessary violence”
For Coco Gauff, the crisis goes well beyond news headlines. There are some people she knows personally who have been affected and who were stuck in the region too. She addressed her perspective during her pre-tournament press conference, where she balanced between her personal experiences and the tragedy itself.
“First off, what’s happening is unfortunate, and my thoughts and prayers are out there for everyone affected, innocent lives being taken. I think it’s a lot of unnecessary violence going on
With her words, she noted that while she has always felt safe while competing in the Middle East, the sudden escalation of violence and dangers was a reminder that there are some things more important than any sport or any aspect of entertainment.
Alcaraz and Sinner also have their say
The two best players of the men’s spectrum also broke their silence on the situation. Carlos Alcaraz expressed a similar sense of shock as Gauff at how quickly the environment has changed.

He admitted that seeing his peers unable to travel was worrying, though he emphasized the need to maintain his professional focus on the court and his thoughts and prayers on the innocent people affected by this conflict.
Jannik Sinner also echoed the sentiment of impotence that many feel when a global conflict like this happens:

The reality of this global situation is now a frequent topic of conversation among players. Ben Shelton revealed that the locker room is often a space where these anxieties and thoughts are shared, like when players recently dealt with similar travel disruptions in Mexico following regional violence.
