Canelo Alvarez lost his world championship with the defeat to Terence Crawford last September and is now recovering after surgery on his left elbow, although he has already returned to training.
The fighter from Guadalajara has 20 years of professional experience and will return to the ring in September in Saudi Arabia at the age of 36.
Sergio Mora asks Saul Alvarez to retire
Former boxer Sergio Mora (29-5-2), who was a WBC super welterweight world champion and the first winner of the TV show The Contender in 2005, believes that Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (63-3-2) should hang up his gloves after so many years.
“At this point, Canelo is an old man at 35 years old. 68 professional fights, he’s been boxing since he was 15 years old. He can’t fight anymore, so we’re not going to see the great pound-for-pound fighter that Canelo was. The waist movement, the power building, nothing.”
“We’re not even seeing Canelo knockouts, because that’s what happens when you start going backwards as a fighter,” Mora told DAZN Boxing, where he is an analyst. “When your legs don’t hold you up anymore, you start thinking about the later rounds. You start thinking about crossing the finish line. You start thinking about your health.”
Canelo Alvarez’s return
Canelo Alvarez will fight on September 12 in Riyadh, as part of the multi-million dollar contract he has with Sheikh Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season for four fights, and this will be the third.
It has not yet been announced who the Jalisco native’s opponent will be, but the date and venue in Riyadh is confirmed, his second fight in Arab lands after his fight with William Scull in May 2025.
