The fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford, due to its expectation, can be considered as the fight of the year in the boxing world. It is sold with the slogan ‘Once in a lifetime’, and it is not usual to see two undisputed champions face to face. Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield were other absolute champions who met, although in a different era and circumstances.
At present, ‘Bud’ is not undisputed, but because he decided to begin his weight climb in search of a super fight against the most media-friendly fighter of the last decade. He previously held all four belts in two divisions, super lightweight and welterweight. Canelo has reigned for years at super middleweight and regained in his previous fight against William Scull the belt that he had to vacate.
Predictions for this fight are rife. Boxing is focused on the event taking place at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and organized by Turki Alalshikh and Dana White. There is something that former champion Amir Khan, who has faced both, said that leads us to investigate a specific fact. Khan expressed that Crawford was the favorite because at this stage of his career “he is less punished than Canelo, he is fresher”.
We can start by saying that, according to how we saw Crawford fight against Madrimov in his last fight, ‘Bud’ may have problems with a much more powerful opponent, as is the case of the Mexican. However, what concerns us is another aspect. Many of Terence’s problems – and it’s not that we have a crystal ball – are going to have to do with his inactivity. Since 2019, Crawford has boxed 41 rounds in total, compared to Canelo’s 118. In the last two years, it has only been 12 rounds for ‘Bud’ and 48 for Alvarez.
The Mexican has been much more active and has fought much more demanding battles in weights that Crawford has not even stepped on. And on the day, Canelo is likely to be ready to offer his best version in years. In boxing, inactivity is usually paid for dearly and that is where we remember that fight between Crawford and Madrimov.
