The Dodger Stadium was dressed up for an emotional tribute to Kobe Bryant on a night that will be etched in the memory of Los Angeles fans. The Dodgers chose August 8 to honor the NBA legend, in reference to the number Bryant wore during the first decade of his career. The star’s widow, Vanessa Bryant, and her daughters Natalia, Bianka and Capri, were on hand to witness the tribute, which included a rousing ovation from the more than 53,000 fans in attendance.
At a particularly special moment of the night, Bianka Bryant was in charge of throwing the ceremonial first pitch, receiving another great ovation from the crowd. As part of the tribute, the first 40,000 fans who entered the stadium received a bobblehead figure of Kobe Bryant, which was very well received.
Kobe’s legacy lives on
This tribute adds to others that the Dodgers have held in the past to honor Bryant, who died in a tragic helicopter accident in January 2020 along with his daughter Gianna
In 2023, for example, fans received a snake-print jersey in reference to Kobe’s famous nickname, “Black Mamba”. The legacy lives on in the heart of Los Angeles and is reverently remembered by one of its most iconic sports franchises.
An attractive duel at Dodger Stadium
The event was not only a tribute to Bryant, but also highlighted an exciting pitching matchup between two of MLB’s all-time greats: Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer. The Dodgers came away with a 5-1 victory, with Kershaw turning in a stellar performance by allowing just one run and striking out four batters in six innings.
