It was a nightmare weekend for the Kansas City Chiefs: not only were they mathematically eliminated with no chance of reaching the NFL playoffs, but they also lost their superstar Patrick Mahomes, raising a higher level of uncertainty about what will happen in the coming months before the start of a new season.
Fortunately for Kansas City, Mahomes has already begun his rehabilitation after undergoing surgery to repair two ligaments in his left knee, and the team appears optimistic according to various reports.
Chiefs Remain Hopeful About Mahomes’ Situation
There’s an atmosphere of optimism within the organization regarding Mahomes, and they even expect the two-time league MVP to return early next season – potentially in time for Week 1.
Rick Burkholder, the team’s vice president of sports medicine and performance, reported that the procedure performed Monday night in Dallas by Dr. Dan Cooper went well, about 24 hours after Mahomes’ final game.
Based on numerous precedents with this type of injury, recovery time is typically estimated at around nine months, though it can vary depending on several factors. The next season is expected to kick off on September 10, 2026, with the Chiefs playing their first game a few days later.
According to multiple reports, Mahomes plans to return to Kansas City no later than this Friday, where he will continue his rehabilitation with Burkholder’s staff, accompanied by Julie Frymyer, his lead athletic trainer and primary physical therapist.
