The departure of Stefon Diggs from the New England Patriots left many questions behind. In the end, however, everything seems to indicate that the Patriots’ front office prioritized internal stability after the wide receiver accumulated several personal issues during the year he spent with the team.
There were numerous questions about who could become the ideal replacement for the player, who delivered a solid regular season but faded during the playoffs. Now that free agency is fully underway, New England appears to have found his successor.
Romeo Doubs signed with the New England Patriots
According to several circulating reports, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs has signed a four-year, $80 million contract with the New England Patriots in free agency, a move that the team has already officially announced.
So far in his career, the receiver has not managed to reach a season with 1,000 or more receiving yards. However, he will turn 26 years old this coming January, and his youth could prove to be a significant advantage for the team.
Now that he will have passes delivered by quarterback Drake Maye, that statistical milestone might finally stop being just a dream and instead become a reality with the revitalized Patriots under the leadership of head coach Mike Vrabel, who in his first year with the franchise led the team all the way to Super Bowl LX.
Doubs spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the Packers, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2022 Draft after he played college football at the University of Nevada.
His numbers during the 2025 season were the following:
- 724 yards
- 55 receptions
- 6 touchdowns
At first glance, those numbers might appear modest, yet they placed him among the most productive receivers within the franchise during that campaign. His best performance came during the postseason against the Chicago Bears, where he recorded 124 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Among his most notable traits are his strong hands and his ability to secure the football even in contested situations against opposing defenders. His drop rate as a rookie stood at only 10.6 percent, highlighting his reliability.
Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 204 pounds, Doubs brings a physical presence that allows him to attack deep routes effectively. That dimension could become extremely valuable for both the Patriots and Maye, who now gain a receiver capable of becoming a trusted target downfield.
However, it is also worth remembering that the Packers suspended him for one game due to “conduct detrimental to the team” in October of 2025. The previous year, reports had already surfaced that he skipped a couple of practices because he was frustrated about not receiving the same opportunities within the offense.
That history will likely remain something Vrabel must keep in mind as Doubs begins his tenure in New England, ensuring that similar situations do not arise again while the receiver becomes part of the team’s plans for the future and its pursuit of continued success.
