Brazil, the land of soccer, where football is a religion, now welcomes American football to São Paulo for a historic NFL regular-season matchup. Following the success of last year’s inaugural game in 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs, one of the league’s top contenders, will face the Los Angeles Chargers in what promises to be an unforgettable clash.

For this event, the NFL has been working tirelessly on its expansion program, with Brazil as its main target in South America. Bringing such an important regular-season clash to Brazilian soil is no easy task, it’s a herculean mission. Still, the league’s primary goal is to deliver a world-class spectacle at the iconic Neo Quimica Arena.

NFL season opener in Brazil: historic mission to expand football in South America

NFL fans are eagerly awaiting the showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers at the Neo Quimica Arena. A packed stadium is expected, with thousands of supporters ready to witness this historic spectacle up close.

That is why the NFL has carefully considered every detail to ensure that fans in Brazil experience the league as closely as possible. This effort is part of a broader strategy, as the league faces the challenge of organizing games not only in Brazil but also in cities like Dublin, London, Berlin, and Madrid, an ambitious task that demands precision and planning.

It is not only about the vast amount of equipment the league needed to send to Brazil, but also the large number of people involved in making the event possible. Beyond the delegations of both teams, the NFL is bringing along production crews, sponsors, suppliers, and vendors. In total, nearly 2,000 to 2,500 people will be dedicated to the execution of the game

Another important challenge for the NFL is adapting the stadium for an American football game. The Neo Química Arena, home to soccer, must be transformed to meet the needs of a roster of 53 players per team, along with the fans attending the event. Beyond the field adjustments, the league also faces the task of educating local fans who are less familiar with the dynamics of the NFL, ensuring they can fully enjoy and understand the experience.

Another major challenge for the NFL is broadcasting the game in Brazil, since televising an American football matchup requires a completely different setup compared to soccer. Specialized cameras, replay systems, and additional technical equipment must be brought in to ensure the broadcast meets league standards.

The league faces many challenges, but despite all these hurdles, the NFL already has valuable experience hosting games beyond U.S. borders. This international exposure is something both the Chargers and the Chiefs are also familiar with, having previously represented the league in matches abroad.

A big challenge as well for the teams

It is worth noting that both the Los Angeles Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs already know what it takes to prepare for games outside U.S. soil. The Chargers, in fact, hold the distinction of being the first NFL team to play on five different continents, while for the Chiefs, this upcoming matchup will mark their fourth international appearance.

A clear example of preparation comes from the Los Angeles Chargers, who sent a truck loaded with everything they might need: food supplies, cleats, dental floss, longer studs for the soccer-style field, a shoe dryer, and much more. The logistics began as early as May, with the truck departing Los Angeles, traveling across the country to New York, and then making the transatlantic journey to Brazil.

The Kansas City Chiefs also took preparation seriously. Beyond logistics, the team carefully managed the dynamics of their 11-hour flight to São Paulo. Patrick Mahomes explained that players kept moving during the trip to avoid stiffness, while head coach Andy Reid adjusted their practice schedule two days earlier than usual to minimize disruptions and ensure the team stayed in rhythm ahead of the big game.

This clash in Brazil will mark the season opener for both teams in the 2025 NFL regular season. The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers will battle not only for the first win of the year but also to prove themselves as serious Super Bowl contenders.
