“You didn’t deserve this,” Thompson wrote on Instagram, tagging Penister. “These [idiots] love playing with guns and acting like gangsters, but they end up being losers with no money. My little sister was sweet, innocent, and had her whole life ahead of her. I know it wasn’t my fault, but I can’t help saying ‘I’m sorry.’ This world didn’t deserve you, baby. Watch over me from up there while I play for you.”

Penister, one of the victims, was not his biological sister but a very close friend he grew up with, his agent, Chris Turnage, explained to the British outlet DailyMail.

On Monday, Thompson shared several photos with Penister on social media as a way to say goodbye.

BJ Thompson suffered a cardiac arrest

BJ Thompson, who recently turned 26, has faced very difficult times. In June 2024, he suffered a cardiac arrest following a seizure during a team meeting. He was hospitalized and placed on a ventilator but managed to recover.

In 2023, he was selected in the fifth round of the Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, joining Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce to win Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers. He did not play in the 2024 season due to his health complications.

This Monday, he posted three photos on his birthday with the message: “Almost lost my life at 25… still, blessed to make it to 26.”
