In 2011, Steve Williams and Tiger Woods were at the center of one of the most talked-about breakups in the golf world. For years, Williams had been Woods’ caddie, but everything changed when Woods decided not to allow his caddie to accompany him while recovering from an injury. Instead, Williams agreed to caddie for Adam Scott at the US Open, which sparked growing tension between the two.
Now, with time passing, Williams reflects on that pivotal moment and admits that, in hindsight, he should have taken a different path. As Williams said in a recent episode of Don Harvey’s YouTube channel: “My wife said, ‘No, if Tiger doesn’t want you to caddy, don’t do it,’ and I should have listened.”
How the friendship between Williams and Woods broke down?
The incident took place when Williams traveled to the US Open with the intention of caddying for Tiger Woods, who, due to an injury, would not be participating in the tournament. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, Williams found out that Woods would not be playing and, to everyone’s surprise, Adam Scott asked him to caddy for him instead. “I had left here on a Saturday with the intention that Tiger was playing in the tournament… and when I arrived there, I found out that he wasn’t going to play,” Williams recalled. However, the situation became complicated when Woods’ representative called to express Woods’ preference that Williams not caddy for Scott.
Looking back, Williams regrets not following his wife’s advice. “I’d probably still be caddying for Tiger today,” he confessed, pointing out that if he had followed his intuition, things might have turned out differently. Despite their split, Williams continues to recognize the qualities that made Woods one of the greatest golfers in history. His dedication to golf is something Williams still deeply respects.
Despite their separation, Williams still praises Woods’ determination, which has remained strong throughout the years. “Tiger had a goal, and that was obviously to surpass Jack Nicklaus’ 18 majors, and he was never going to stop working hard, even to this day, even as we speak,” Williams stated in a recent episode of Dom Harvey’s YouTube channel.
