One of the most sought-after free agents in the MLB offseason, Pete Alonso, has remained unsigned longer than expected, having yet to reach an agreement with the New York Mets.
Alonso has consistently stated his desire to stay with the Queens team, but the team is not prepared to give him the money he expects; it’s either that, or the Mets are waiting for demand for Alonso to fall and they can offer him a little less money, reported totalprosports.com.
Everyone assumed Alonso would sign behind Juan Soto to create one of the most feared duos in Major League Baseball, and that delay has generated much criticism from New York fans who are demanding the return of the prodigal son.
The fans’ complaint to the Mets owner for not signing Alonso
WFAN host Keith McPherson joined the call for the Mets to speed up the process of re-signing the first baseman who has played for the team since 2019.
“Give Pete Alonso the money he has earned after all these years and worry about the future. It won’t hurt their pockets,” McPherson said, adding that team owner Steve Cohen will have no problem giving Alonso the money he asks for to continue playing for the organization.
“This guy is made of money. We already saw him trade contracts. Now, all of a sudden, you can’t do the right thing with Pete Alonso because you have young talent on the way? Because David Stearns is telling you to evaluate the young guys?” added the broadcaster via Audacy.
Alonso and Bregman among big fish yet to sign
Alonso is not the only slugger available on the free agent market. Alex Bregman is looking for a team and some think he is more likely to close a deal first.
It is a fact that Bregman and Alonso will be on a team before the regular season, but a late signing will make things worse for the two, especially if they miss spring training.
The Boston Red Sox are linked to Bregman, while Alonso seems to have his mind set on the Mets.
Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras, will do whatever it takes to get his client signed with one of the 30 MLB teams, and the player is expected to close a deal before spring training.
