The world of fashion is ever-changing. What’s new one day is old the next. Older generations tend to get stuck in their ways, but since professional athletes remain the same age, relatively, they are usually seen wearing up-to-date outfits.
The more casual style that’s prevalent nowadays is much different than the age of suits and ties, which dominated the fashion scene 50-plus years ago. While there are still some coaches and players who dress formally, most want to be trendy and comfortable. In the NBA, that doesn’t necessarily sit well with Pat Riley.
Pat Riley believes NBA coaches should wear suits and ties; Stephen A. Smith believes players should as well
The President of the Miami Heat was honored with a statue by the Los Angeles Lakers this week. While speaking to the media, one of his comments went viral: He wants head coaches to to “back to coats and ties”. Riley believes dressing up like that makes them look more like a “leader“.
That sparked the attention of Stephen A. Smith, who used Riley’s words to take a somewhat unprovoked shot at LeBron James. Smith agrees with Riley, but believes the formal dressing should extend to players as well.
Many fans took it as Smith being salty for no reason, pointing out that James generally dresses quite well; especially in comparison to most of his NBA peers. James hasn’t been shy about wearing a suit and tie in the past, particularly come playoff time.
Perhaps Smith is trying to reignite his beef with James, which got kickstarted due to comments from the talkshow host about Bronny James. That seemingly blew over, but maybe it will resurface now.
