A fresh wave of speculation over the future of Travis Kelce has emerged after veteran ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith proposed that the Kansas City Chiefs star might hang up his cleats.
As Kelce‘s form nosedives on the field, the outspoken sports commentator has suggested that the 36-year-old’s decision to retire could hinge on matters away from his football career, chiefly his fiancée, globally-renowned artist Taylor Swift.
Smith, speaking on First Take, stressed that he has no inside knowledge. But he believes the combination of Kelce‘s age, his evolving priorities, and his high-profile relationship with Swift could prompt him to retire after the 2025 season.
“I will tell you that that’s what I think he’s going to do [retire],” Smith said about Kelce‘s retirement plans.
“Obviously, he has a beautiful lady in his life, where there’s a lot of good things for him to go home to. And so, because of that, I think the combination of all of those things [would matter].”
An unwanted distraction for struggling Chiefs
The suggestion lands at a precarious moment for the Kansas City Chiefs. This season has been a struggle by the franchise’s high standards, and by Kelce‘s own legacy expectations.
Through 13 games in 2025, Kelce has been targeted 83 times but converted only 60 receptions for 727 yards and five touchdowns – a noticeable dip from his peak years. However, it still ranks him second in the tight end standings for endzone contributions.
On Sunday, the Chiefs dropped a critical game to the Houston Texans, during which Kelce was held to one catch for eight yards despite five targets.
That drop in production has only fueled the retirement debate. Some within the league view the physical toll of another full NFL season – especially with visible decline – as a valid reason for retirement.
Given that Kelce is now in his mid-30s and already a three-time Super Bowl champion, many agree that off-field opportunities could outweigh the risk of another grueling football year.
The role of Swift in the speculation is central. Smith noted her presence, and Kelce‘s engagements outside football – including media appearances – as core factors driving his theory.
Some outlets argue that Swift‘s influence may encourage Kelce to keep playing as she has publicly supported his football career, and making retirement presumptions based on a romantic relationship oversimplifies a complex decision.
Will Travis Kelce retire at the end of the season?
After the Super Bowl loss earlier this year, Kelce confirmed his intention to return, emphasizing he still loves football and doesn’t believe this season will be his last.
He declared his commitment to training hard and returning in top shape. That said, the downward trend in performance and physical demand remain real constraints.
But there appears to be no decline in his motivation to win, which is sometimes noticeable in players who have achieved so much in similarly illustrious careers as Kelce‘s.
As the season winds down, and the Chiefs‘ playoff hopes hang in the balance with a 6-7 record, the question of retirement won’t even be considered.
Should they fail to make the postseason for the first time since 2014, the calls for Kelce to hang up his cleats from the likes of Smith will only grow.
