Stephen A. Smith has challenged Megyn Kelly’s heated reaction to a false report about the Philadelphia Eagles potentially turning down a White House visit after their victory in Super Bowl 2025.
On Tuesday’s edition of The Stephen A. Smith Show, Smith posed a thoughtful question to Kelly.
“Was that necessary, though?” following Kelly’s fiery remarks.
Kelly’s strong words
Kelly took to Twitter, where she told the Eagles to “GO F YOURSELVES” in response to a report published by The U.S. Sun on February 6.
The report, which claimed that a member of the Eagles’ ownership and an unnamed player might refuse a White House invitation, quickly made headlines. However, the story was released three days before the Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in New Orleans, and it was later debunked by the White House itself.
Despite the correction, Kelly’s initial outburst drew attention. On Monday, she acknowledged the White House’s denial of the report but did not back down from her scornful tone.
Smith was not convinced by Kelly’s reaction, calling it unnecessary.
“Really? They ain’t feeling Trump. So what?” Smith responded on his show, questioning whether Kelly would suggest that the 74 million people who didn’t support Trump should be dismissed the same way.
“You don’t need to do that. It’s just not necessary.”
Smith also pointed out that, if any team had reason to skip a White House visit, it would be the Eagles, referencing the team’s previous snub of President Trump after their Super Bowl win in 2018.
The Eagles decided not to attend the White House due to a dispute over the national anthem, and Trump rescinded the invitation, citing some players’ refusal to stand for the anthem.
“If any team was justified in not wanting to show up to the White House, it would be the Eagles,” Smith stated.
Despite the past tensions, former President Trump has extended a new invitation to the Eagles following their Super Bowl 2025 triumph.
On Tuesday, Trump expressed his admiration for the team’s performance, confirming they would receive an invitation to the White House.
“They deserve to be down here and we hope to see them,” Trump said.
An Eagles source told CNN that the team would be “honored” to visit 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue should the invitation stand.
