Indiana Fever seems to have a keen eye for the WNBA Draft. Both Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark were the first to be selected in 2023 and 2024 respectively and without a doubt, both have repaid the trust by doing a great job.
Both led the team to Playoffs -a feat they had not achieved since 2016-, won the Rookie of the Year award, played together in the All-Star Game and today they are indispensable for the Fever.
Despite the fact that the duo didn’t click early on, when they managed to fine-tune some details, the chemistry between them was undeniable. In fact, their coach, Stephanie White, dared to compare them to one of the most memorable duos in the NBA: “When you think of Stockton and Malone, sure… They (Clark and Boston) are going to be remembered as the best,” said the Indiana Fever coach.
And not only White has made mention of this explosive duo, but Clark herself has highlighted the fluidity she has in her passing, her perception of space and how she “glides” between defenses. Moreover, nine months earlier, she already saw her great potential in Boston: “You’ll be amazing because you’re amazing”, CC told her 23-year-old teammate in August.
This little ritual, repeated every game day, became reality: White would entrust Boston as the backbone of the team’s entire offense.
Our system is a little different than what she’s used to… right now, we want to use AB as the central axis.
Also, in her time on the Good Follow microphones, White compared Boston to the role NBA star Nikola Jokic fills on the Denver Nuggets: “We’re going to use her a little more like a hub, like a Nikola Jokic, where she gets the ball and is involved in creating for others.”
Of course, this comparison raises the level and expectations of the fans, since Nikola was chosen 3 times as NBA MVP and Aliyha has only played two seasons with Indiana Fever, although she has already shown great potential.
Boston’s reaction
Growing up as a point guard, her assists have made a big impact, she went from 2.7 in her rookie season to 3.2 last year. Knowing that she will be able to take on this new role with confidence, she explained: “I feel like last year I was kind of that hub but it was on the block. But now I’m the hub, it could be the mid-post, the three, the corner. So it varies… it’s just really just understanding where I’m at on the floor and what my next move should be.”
Aliyha finished last year with 14.0 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.2 blocks. She also begins 2025 ranked 15th in Fever history with 1138 points scored, of which her 13 double-doubles matched the second most points in a regular season in team history.
