Stefon Diggs’ future with the New England Patriots is in jeopardy. The star wide receiver has landed in serious trouble after a video surfaced on social media, putting him in the crosshairs of both the NFL and head coach Mike Vrabel.
Diggs made headlines for all the wrong reasons following Memorial Day weekend. A leaked video shows the receiver on a yacht with several women, carrying a plastic bag containing an unidentified pink powder.
While it’s impossible to confirm what the bag contained, the Patriots were forced to respond.
“It’s something we’re aware of, and obviously, we want to make great decisions on and off the field,” Vrabel stated when asked about the footage. Now, an insider suggests those decisions could lead to Diggs’ dismissal.
What’s next for Diggs with the Patriots?
The team has yet to make an official statement on Diggs’ fate. Addressing the situation, Vrabel emphasized, “Any conversations I’ve had with Stefon will remain between him and me and the club.”
Sports Illustrated insider Albert Breer believes Diggs’ future hinges on that conversation with Vrabel. “I sort of think all things are on the table, and I think really, to me at least, it’s going to boil down to what Stefon told Vrabel and how believable it was,” Breer explained.
He pointed out that neither the NFL nor the team can determine the contents of the bag seen in the video, making Diggs’ explanation crucial. “So then, it’s up to the team to make a decision. And if the team wants to recoup any of the guaranteed money, they have to cut him right away,” Breer warned.
He also noted that Diggs’ recent absence from team practices may have been at Vrabel’s request. “And maybe they’re sorting through everything now.”
Diggs’ future hinges on his version of events
Breer insists that Diggs’ conversation with Vrabel will be the key to determining his fate with the team. “If [Diggs] comes in and gives you a believable story and then falls on deaf ears and goes in front of the team and apologizes, then everything will be fine,” Breer stated.
However, if Diggs presents an unconvincing explanation, his days in New England could be numbered. “If there’s some sort of excuse-making and it’s not believable, that’s where I think it’s ‘We can’t trust him.'”
Diggs’ NFL future is now in his own hands-but signs suggest it may be slipping away.
