Sophie Cunningham probably didn’t expect to go viral this week-at least not like this.

During Tuesday night’s game between the Indiana Fever and the Los Angeles Sparks, a green sex toy was thrown onto the court, landing just inches from Cunningham with 2:05 left in the second quarter. The moment, caught live on CBS Sports Network, marked the third such incident in a week at a WNBA game.

To make it even more surreal, Cunningham had just urged fans last week to “stop throwing sex toys” at games. She wasn’t amused then-but this time, she couldn’t help but laugh at the irony.

“This did NOT age well,” she posted afterward, quoting her own earlier plea in a self-roast that quickly went viral.

After the toy landed, Sparks star Kelsey Plum gave it a swift kick off the court while referees paused play to ensure the area was cleared. Broadcasters were less amused. CBS Sports analyst Mary Murphy called the behavior “shameful,” while play-by-play announcer Rahshaun Haylock condemned the repeated disruptions: “It’s ridiculous. The joke isn’t funny… you’re putting people at harm.”

League Trend or Dangerous Distraction?

The incident is part of a troubling pattern. The first sex toy toss came during a Golden State Valkyries vs. Atlanta Dream game last week. Days later, it happened again during a Valkyries road matchup in Chicago. Now, a third occurrence in Los Angeles has players, coaches, and the league itself calling for action.

The WNBA responded with a clear warning: any fan who throws an object onto the court will be ejected, face a minimum one-year ban, and may be arrested.“The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority,” the league said in an official statement.

According to Yahoo Sports, the fan responsible for the first incident was arrested shortly after the game. Teams are now working closely with arena security to identify and remove disruptive attendees before things escalate further.

Still, Cunningham’s humor helped diffuse a bizarre moment. Even Fever head coach Christie Sides acknowledged the absurdity postgame: “Obviously it’s not something we want to see, but Sophie… she handled it like a pro.”

Whether the streak ends here or not, one thing is clear-Sophie Cunningham’s reaction turned an uncomfortable situation into a viral masterclass in self-deprecating comedy.
