The 2025 WNBA season was marked by a wave of injuries, but no team suffered more setbacks than the Indiana Fever.

Among the five season-ending injuries was the loss of Sophie Cunningham, a key part of Indiana’s core alongside Caitlin Clark. With the team’s playoff hopes cut short, many fans were left wondering: how is Sophie doing?

Now, after weeks without public updates, Cunningham has finally offered insight into her recovery – and it’s more optimistic than many expected.

During an appearance on the “Show Me Something” podcast, Sophie revealed that she had been pushing ahead in rehab, even slightly ahead of schedule.

“I kind of let myself get out of that cast without a doctor’s order,” she said. “But I had my checkup and they’re like, ‘you’re progressing really well and you look awesome… I can bend it past where they even want it but it’s not equivalent to my other leg.'”

Surgery, setbacks and staying positive

The injury occurred on August 17 in a game against the Connecticut Sun. As Bria Hartley drove to the basket, she accidentally crashed into Cunningham‘s right leg. Sophie immediately dropped to the floor in pain, and it was clear from her expression that something was wrong.

“I’m like, Holy s-,” Stephanie White recalled at the time. The incident sparked frustration from Sophie’s family as well, who criticized the officiating. She was later diagnosed with a torn MCL and underwent surgery soon after.

Since then, recovery has been steady, though not without difficulty. Post-surgery complications affected her digestion due to the medication she was prescribed. “I need to start taking laxatives… I have literally just been inhaling food and nothing’s come out,” she joked on the podcast.

Despite that, Cunningham is pushing forward with determination. “I’m ready to kind of get back lifting weights and like moving… like I’m good to go, you know, and that doesn’t really happen to me very often. So that’s good,” she said.

From posting smiling selfies with the caption, “Starting to feel like me again, so y’all better watch tf out…,” to relaxing poolside with confidence, it’s clear Sophie is finding joy again – even if her full return is still in progress.

With the final phase of rehab underway, it’s looking more likely that she’ll be ready for the 2026 season – and maybe even stronger than before.
