Speculation surrounding the Indiana Fever‘s Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark intensified this week after a viral video sparked fan theories about the nature of their relationship, with fans hinting they could be more than colleagues.

The footage, which showed the 23-year-old guard looking adoringly at her blonde teammate, quickly circulated online, prompting wild reactions and unfounded suggestions of a romantic connection.

That’s despite the pair of them apparently being straight. Clark has been in a long-term relationship with Connor McCaffery, while the 28-year-old has made references to seeking a man on her social media accounts.

Though none of the viral discourse has been confirmed or taken seriously by either player, The Fever’s second-choice guard now stepped it up a notch by caught wind of the social media speculation and added fuel.

Cunningham did so by resharing the clip with a caption directed at Clark reading, “Fix your face.”

The caption, while clearly playful in tone, opened the door to further fan theories. Some interpreted it as her dismissing any romantic interpretation, while others speculated it hinted at something deeper.

Cunningham, acquired by the Fever in the offseason via trade from the Phoenix Mercury, has developed a visible camaraderie with Clark since joining the team as the pair continue to develop a strong chemistry.

Regardless, there seems to be nothing serious as the pair seem to be intentionally toying with the internet’s fascination with their friendship, teasing fans keen for a prospective link-up between them.

Fever struggle without Cunningham and Clark

While the online chatter continues, both Cunningham and Clark are temporarily sidelined due to injury, and the timing has left the Indiana Fever without two of their key contributors as they begin to struggle.

Clark is recovering from a quadriceps strain sustained during a recent matchup with the New York Liberty. According to team updates, she is not expected to return to play before June 9. Cunningham, meanwhile, injured her ankle during a game against the Connecticut Sun and is currently listed as day-to-day.

Prior to her injury, the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year was putting up 19 points, 9.3 assists, and six rebounds per game whilst Sophie was producing averages of 6.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists through the early part of the season.

The impact on the Fever has been evident too. Since that Liberty game, the team has lost both of their contests to the Washington Mystics (83-77) and Sun (85-83). That’s left the side with a .333 record and in fourth in the Eastern Conference, eighth in the WNBA overall.

They will look to get back into the swing of things with another clash against the Mystics on Tuesday, June 4 at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse but will have to do so without their supremely talented Clark once again.
