The Chicago Bears’ Jonathan Owens and Team USA’s Simone Biles have finally gone on their honeymoon after spotting a gap in the sporting schedules, despite getting married in April 2023, as they tell fans where they’ve gone.

Almost two NFL seasons and an Olympics later, the loved-up couple have finally had their romantic getaway to celebrate their union. They hinted at the trip to fans on Sunday, February 16 before now revealing they’ve touched down in South Africa.

Despite tying the knot 22 months ago, the American pair have only just managed to make the trip thanks to their schedules. Owens played for the Green Bay Packers in the NFL before then having to relocate to Chicago, whilst Biles competed in the World Championships in Belgium and the Olympics in France.

They haven’t said which part they’ve gone to as Simone only showed them with two champagne glasses in a hotel room on Instagram, but attractive options include Cape Town, Knysna and Johannesburg among many others.

The country is home to 59 million people and is known for its picturesque landscape, beautiful coastal cities and safaris, as well as various activities such as surfing and hiking. It even hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which was eventually won by Spain through Andres Iniesta.

It also has a dark and bloodied history with imperialism colonialism after being invaded by the Dutch and British during the age of European empires. Conflict with the British created the Boer Wars in 1880-81 and 1899-1902, before it was annexed into the British Empire.

The country was then formed into the Union of South Africa until it became a republic in 1961, but was notoriously known for the period of violent racial segregation called Apartheid, which only ended in the 1990s.

Biles and Owens to host Met Gala

The romantic getaway comes in what is turning out to be a good February for the couple, after it was announced that Biles and Owens will both be co-hosting the upcoming edition of the Met Gala in May 2025.

The theme of the event will focus on Superfine: Tailoring Black Style and is inspired by Monica L. Miller’s Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity book, with a specific emphasis on Tailored For You.

There will be 12 sections on show, each representing a distinct style, for people to base their unique outfits upon as the Met Gala promises a, “a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism.”
