Federal prosecutors have released a shocking audio recording revealing how Ippei Mizuhara, Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter, impersonated the two-way MLB superstar to authorize fraudulent bank transactions. The recording was a key element in a court filing recommending a nearly five-year prison sentence for Mizuhara, who pleaded guilty to defrauding Ohtani of almost $17 million.
The audio, obtained by the Department of Justice, captures Mizuhara impersonating Ohtani during a phone call to a bank, attempting to approve a $200,000 wire transfer. Prosecutors stated that Mizuhara exploited his close relationship with Ohtani to gain access to his financial accounts, bypassing security protocols by linking Ohtani’s online account to his own email and phone number.
The Gambling Addiction Defense
Mizuhara’s legal team has argued that his actions were fueled by a severe gambling addiction, citing debts exceeding $40 million. In a court filing, Mizuhara expressed regret for his crimes, admitting to feeling “dead inside” as his gambling spiraled out of control. However, prosecutors countered that Mizuhara’s motivations extended beyond addiction, pointing to extravagant personal expenses, including $325,000 spent on baseball cards and misuse of funds intended for dental work.
Despite earning $500,000 annually as Ohtani’s interpreter and receiving additional financial benefits, Mizuhara described feeling “severely underpaid” for his round-the-clock responsibilities. His tasks included managing Ohtani’s endorsements, coordinating legal matters, and even personal errands like grocery shopping and pet care.
Prosecutors Push for Restitution
Prosecutors are seeking restitution of nearly $17 million to Ohtani and $1.1 million to the IRS. However, Mizuhara has declared his inability to repay the debts, citing his unemployment and reliance on family support. The case has also raised the likelihood of Mizuhara’s deportation to Japan, where he faces public scrutiny.
