Almost all of the attention in the Sanders family is hogged by Deion Sanders and Shedeur Sanders. Rightfully so, as Deion is the head coach of a promising program in Colorado, while Shedeur is starting his NFL career following an extremely productive collegiate career. That hasn’t left much fanfare for Shilo Sanders, but he has goals of his own.
Undrafted and a 25-year-old rookie, the odds are stacked against him. Sanders has to work his way up the Tampa Bay Buccaneers depth chart, but there’s a glimmer of hope due to the inexperienced players in front of him. Antoine Winfield Jr. and Tykee Smith are entrenched as starters, with the former being arguably the best safety in the league. Sanders would do well to learn from him and develop, and it looks like he’s off to a great start in that regard.
Shilo Sanders has a chance to make the Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster
A video of both Winfield and Sanders doing a turn-and-run drill made the rounds this week. In it, Winfield pulls it off in a smooth motion, as is customary. But fans were surprised by how well Sanders ran it; in fact, some say he ran it even quicker and better than Winfield.
The other safeties Sanders is competing with for a roster spot are Kaevon Merriweather, Marcus Banks, Rashad Wisdom and J.J. Roberts. Christian Izien is secure as the third safety, but the rest have plenty to prove, just like Sanders.
If Sanders continues to run drills like he did in that video, he has a good chance to latch on as safety depth and a special teamer. He’s more than capable of carving out an NFL career.
