The Cleveland Browns are in a precarious position at the moment. No one expected much of them this season, but turmoil started slightly earlier than expected in 2025. On Tuesday, reports surfaced that head coach Kevin Stefanski is making a quarterback switch; just not the one that many fans were hoping for.
Joe Flacco will be replaced as the starter by third round rookie Dillon Gabriel, who had been backing him up through the first four games. It’s yet to be seen if Gabriel is ready for primetime, but Flacco simply wasn’t getting the job done. The move has fans of Shedeur Sanders feeling very hopeful that they will see him in action at some point this season, especially if Gabriel struggles. But that may not actually be the case.
Shedeur Sanders remains third on Browns depth chart after Joe Flacco benching
With the Week 5 game nearing, the Browns released an updated depth chart. Gabriel is now at the top, yet Sanders remains the third string QB. That means if Gabriel gets injured during the game, Stefanski would just turn right back to Flacco instead of Sanders.
That move isn’t sitting right with Sanders’ fans. Many of them feel as if Stefanski has a vendetta against him. In reality, it appears that Cleveland’s coaching staff simply doesn’t think Sanders is ready to play in an NFL game. They want to develop him by letting him sit and take mental reps.
That may actually be the best course of action, as Cleveland’s offensive situation isn’t exactly conducive to success for a young quarterback. Entering that situation too soon could be detrimental for a young player’s development.
