The wait is over for Shedeur Sanders. After agonizing hours of waiting, the former Colorado Buffaloes star finally heard a team call his name in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Cleveland Browns selected him with the sixth pick in the fifth round, 144th overall.

The path of Deion Sanders’ son to the draft is one of the most controversial in recent years. From being one of the top prospects in the 2025 class, Shedeur was snubbed in the first two days of the draft, causing confusion among fans and detractors alike.

Before the draft, Sanders’ name was linked to teams like the Las Vegas Raiders, the New Orleans Saints, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Browns. However, none of them took him in the early rounds until Cleveland crafted a deal that netted them the young prospect.

The deal to land Shedeur

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Browns made a last-minute deal with Seattle to move up to 144th overall and take Sanders. In return, the Seahawks received the Browns’ fifth- and sixth-round picks, 166th and 192nd overall.

The deal ended hours of anxiety for the Sanders family, endless speculation from analysts, and a litany of criticism from Shedeur fans. People like President Donald Trump and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones harshly criticized NFL teams for snubbing the former Buffaloes star.

True to form, Sanders immediately took to social media to celebrate the selection with a brief message summarizing his gratitude for being called and his relief at hearing his name in the draft: “Thank you, GOD.”

What’s next for Sanders?

The Browns have yet to confirm the date for their rookie minicamp, but according to the league’s schedule, it could be between May 2-5 or May 9-12. This will be Sanders’ first exposure to the team’s discipline and his first opportunity to impress head coach Kevin Stefanski.

However, Shedeur’s task won’t be easy. The Colorado product will be the fourth-stringer behind starter Deshaun Watson, veteran Joe Flacco, and third-year quarterback Kenny Pickett. Sanders faces an uphill battle, but he also has the talent and quality to overcome this new obstacle in his career.
