At this time last Thanksgiving, Shedeur Sanders was guiding the Colorado Buffaloes to their best record since 2016, earning them a spot among the best 25 teams in the country. Now, without him, his father Deion Sanders and the team are enduring a disappointing season. A lot has happened to Shedeur in one year: he was drafted by the Browns with the 114th pick, after initially being projected as a top-10 selection, and spent the offseason and the first 11 weeks as a backup and was overlooked by Coach Kevin Stefanski.

Then came Dillon Gabriel’s concussion, giving Shedeur the opportunity to prove his value. Starting his first NFL game against the struggling Raiders in Week 12, he became the 42nd quarterback to start for the Browns since 1999, but more importantly, he became the first Cleveland quarterback to win his first NFL start since Eric Zeier in 1995.

Shilo Sanders Pushes Boundaries in Viral Thanksgiving Prayer

After securing the win, Shedeur earned the right to start this week’s game against the formidable San Francisco 49ers, his first home start. As he prepared for the challenge, Shedeur spent Thanksgiving with his brother Shilo and his mother Pilar Sanders. The highlight of their holiday came during the prayer before the meal, which instantly went viral.

Shilo offered a hilarious and audacious request, praying for his brother to have success as the Browns’ starting quarterback so he could secure a roster spot in Cleveland: “Please allow Shedeur to do his best so he can pull some strings to get me on the Browns, too. And please make No. 21 available somehow.”

Shedeur immediately burst into laughter after the boundary-pushing request to make number 21 available, responding, “That’s Denzel Ward. He’s the franchise player. 21 gone, bro.” Shilo quickly countered, “Well, never mind, 28 will do,” before adding an unexpected gesture.

Shedeur knows that Ward is highly respected in Cleveland; he was the 4th overall pick in 2018 and has been one of the league’s best defensive backs ever since. Shilo’s own NFL career was brief after he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent but was cut before making the 53-man roster or even the practice squad. If there is one thing Cleveland does well, it is defense, making the idea of Shilo earning a spot a long shot.

Can Shedeur Deliver the Unexpected Upset?

Let’s be honest, as a rookie quarterback, Shedeur still has a lot to improve upon, but playing and learning on the field is the best way to do it. Although the Browns are not yet mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, making a late run looks very difficult.

However, if Shedeur can surprise everyone and manage a victory against the talented San Francisco 49ers, he could help the Browns achieve a three-game winning streak for the first time since 2023. Following the 49ers, they host the Tennessee Titans and his friend, the first overall pick Cam Ward, a team that has struggled significantly this season.
