The Cleveland Browns are facing an unusual situation in the NFL, though they’ll soon need to make decisions about the quarterback battle for the starting role. With the start of training camp, clarity is expected regarding the position heading into 2025.

The big question is what will happen with Shedeur Sanders, who could even find himself in a precarious limbo.

Shedeur Sanders is at risk

To say that Shedeur Sanders is at risk is to acknowledge that everyone in Cleveland is in the same boat. The Browns have used 40 different quarterbacks since 1999, the most in NFL history. Only three have managed a winning record as starters, including Joe Flacco.

“The first week or two of training camp, I expect the Browns to run it similarly to the spring-OTAs and minicamp-all four quarterbacks getting reps,” ESPN‘s Jeremy Fowler said. “First team, second team, and third team. You’re going to see all that. And then Kevin Stefanski will crystalize the pecking order. Shedeur Sanders did impress in the spring, like he was willing to throw the ball in tight windows. He was accurate.”

“But when you ask people with Cleveland, they do bring some caution and (say) he was working with the third-team a lot. Not much of a pass rush. He’s got a ways to go, and so that will probably show early on in camp.”

Kevin Stefanski gave no hints about who’s leading the race for the starting role, though it won’t be long before he begins to hand the reins to one of the four.

What’s certain is that at least one of the quarterbacks will be relegated to the practice squad, which keeps things shrouded in mystery for now.

After various analyses from experts, former players, and executives, one person who believes Shedeur Sanders will secure the starting job is Johnny Manziel.
