Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders has addressed the reports that he declined the Baltimore Ravens’ interest during the 2025 NFL Draft.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Ravens were prepared to select Sanders in the fifth round but were informed by his representatives that he did not wish to join a roster with star quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Instead, Sanders sought a situation where he could compete for a starting role sooner. Subsequently, the Ravens chose offensive lineman Carson Vinson at No. 141, and the Browns selected Sanders three picks later at No. 144.
When asked about the reports of his rejection of the Ravens, Sanders chose to focus on the present. He stated: “My response is I’m focused on the now. I don’t really talk about anything in the past and whatever happened in the past, it is what it is.
“I’m more focused on now. I’m more focused on how this game that we just gone and had and figuring out how to move forward from now.”
This response indicates Sanders’ desire to concentrate on his current situation with the Browns, rather than dwell on past decisions.
Current role with the Browns
As of now, Sanders is listed as the third-string quarterback behind veteran Joe Flacco and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Despite showing promise during the preseason, Sanders has not seen any regular-season action.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski has expressed confidence in Flacco, stating that the team is not considering a quarterback change despite the team’s 0-2 start to the season.
Sanders’ decision to decline the Ravens’ offer has sparked debate among analysts and former players. Some believe that joining a stable organization like the Ravens, known for developing quarterbacks, could have been beneficial for Sanders’ growth – especially playing under Lamar Jackson.
Others argue that his choice to seek a more immediate opportunity with the Browns demonstrates confidence and a desire to compete.
Shedeur looks to the future
With Deshaun Watson sidelined for the season due to an Achilles injury, Sanders’ path to playing time with the Browns may be more accessible.
However, he faces competition from Gabriel, who has shown potential in limited action. The coming weeks will be crucial for Sanders to demonstrate his readiness and potentially earn a spot on the field.
Sanders’ decision during the draft has placed him in a challenging yet potentially rewarding position with the Browns. His focus on the present and commitment to improvement will determine his future role with the team.
Only time will tell if he made the right call in turning down the Ravens, but the 23-year-old’s brave call to follow his gut should earn him some praise.
