Shaquille O’Neal is fighting the corner of Stephen Curry when it comes to the GOAT debate in basketball, as he is tired of people disrespecting the Golden State Warrior.
The three main named in the GOAT debate for many years now have been Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Kevin Durant, with Curry being overlooked given he is younger than that trio and has more of his career to come.
However, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal thinks that it is time for that to change. Speaking on NBA on TNT, Shaq explained why he thinks Curry has forced his way into the discussion.
“I demand you fans to start putting Steph Curry in that greatest of all time conversation. I played against Mike, played with Kobe, played against and with LeBron. They’re all great, but at some point, we’re going to have to put Steph Curry in that category,” Shaq said.
More backers for Curry
Phoenix Suns Legend Steve Nash has spoken very highly about Curry in the past and seems to share the same sentiments as Shaq, meaning Curry is getting some influential voices behind him.
“I think in some ways he’s underappreciated. You know, his impact on the game, the way he was able to be an MVP and a champion in a new way, shooting impossible shots at a high percentage, the way he impacts defenses even when he doesn’t have the ball, like, it’s remarkable,” Nash said.
A four-time NBA champion, MVP of the 2015 and 2016 seasons, MVP of the 2022 Finals, 11-time All-Star, and recipient of numerous other accolades, Curry‘s case to be the GOAT is strong.
Speaking on the podcast “To The Baha,” Theo Pinson bluntly stated that the Warriors‘ star is not “the greatest point guard of all time. I don’t think of Stephen Curry as [a point guard], but he is the best shooter of all time.” The reason? His shoot-first style does not fit the traditional mold of a point guard.
