Serena Williams, the greatest tennis player of all time, appears behind the camera for her new business venture.

Today, the 23-time Grand Slam champion announced her new role as executive producer on a Netflix adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid‘s bestselling novel “Carrie Soto Is Back.”

Serena Williams has a great influence on the character

The great tennis player Serena Williams will be the executive producer of the project, produced by Fifth Season and Picturestart.

The story follows 37-year-old tennis icon Carrie Soto as she comes out of retirement to defend her record of Grand Slam titles, threatened by a young rising star.

Reid has been very open about Williams‘ influence on the character.

Although Carrie Soto is not based on Williams, the character evokes the 23-time Grand Slam winner, and Reid has spoken of the influence of the Williams sisters on the book.

“My incredible respect for the Williams sisters is part of what interests me in tennis,” Reid said in an interview at the launch of the book in 2022

“I wouldn’t write a book about tennis without the influence not only of the absolute glory that has been her career, but also, specifically, of Serena’s quest to achieve as many Grand Slam titles as she has achieved.”

It’s not Serena Williams’ first time

This is not Williams’ first work as a producer. In 2024, the retired tennis icon was an executive producer on her biographical documentary series, In the Arena: Serena Williams. She also served as an executive producer on the 2021 film King Richard, alongside her sister Venus.

Williams and Caroline Currier are executive producers through Nine Two Six Productions along with Picturestart, Reid and Brad Mendelsohn through Circle Management + Production. Fifth Season and Picturestart will serve as co-studios.
