Retiring from tennis with such a distinguished and award-winning career was not easy for Serena Williams. However, almost three years after hanging up her racquet, the sport is still very much a part of her life.

Her presence flooded the court every time she stepped on it and she grew up inspiring millions of girls, teenagers and adults. Proud of this, she decided to stay connected to the sport and joined Toronto Tempo as one of its owners.

This expansion team is the newest team in the WNBA and is expected to debut in 2026. Immersed in basketball since Sydney 2000 Olympic Games as noted by Sean Gregory of TIME magazine, the 23-time Grand Slam champion did not hesitate to show her fanaticism and admiration for Indiana Fever‘s new star, Caitlin Clark.

I felt like she was always herself, she kept to herself, she just muted the noise. She has a maturity that I didn’t have. My compliments to her.

The truth is, Clark is an athlete who just keeps growing. Being the focus of attention – and criticism- Serena celebrates Caitlin for not letting herself be defeated and staying focused on her game.

Serena and the WNBA: promising new project

Toronto Tempo hosted Serena in March of this year and for her “It wasn’t just about a small check and me considering it a ‘big name investment”, but for Serena the most important thing was in bringing ideas based on her experience, being able to make decisions, and we can decide who to hire as a coach and how to run the team, it’s worth so much more.

“I fell in love with women’s basketball, in particular, because I think the athletes are amazing and beautiful. I love Toronto. Some of my biggest wins have been in Toronto. I have some of my best memories there“, the tennis legend explained to TIME.

The truth is that her team is expected to debut next season and, with the impact the WNBA is having – and growing – and the clout of Serena Williams, it wouldn’t be surprising to have more fans following the sport.

How does Clark’s second season start?

The truth is, with Caitlin leading the charge, Indiana finished last season with a 20-20 record, although they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

Now, the Fever will be looking for better results in a new WNBA season and the second for Clark. The big day will be May 17 and they will host Angel Reese and Hailey Van Lith’s Chicago Sky at home.
