Midfielder Savannah DeMelo of Racing Louisville in the NWSL is “stable and conscious” after collapsing during a match against Seattle Reign, which was suspended.
The 27-year-old collapsed shortly before the break. The California native sat on the turf and seconds later fell backwards. The incident forced an ambulance to enter Seattle’s Lumen Field to take her to hospital.
In a statement, her club said: “Savannah received immediate attention on the field and is stable and conscious. She was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.”
The match between Seattle Reign and Racing Louisville, which was tied 0-0, was suspended until a later date.
DeMelo was diagnosed a year ago with hyperthyroidism, after suffering medical complications in another match.
“Playing a 90-minute game was unbearable. I would get to maybe the 25th minute and feel my heart beating so fast, like it was going to jump out of my chest. I was out of breath, I felt completely out of shape. I really didn’t know what was happening to me,” he explained in an interview with ESPN
