New York Jets star cornerback, Sauce Gardner, made news this week after he was warmed to take off his pricey Richard Mille watch during training camp-a, watch he got with rapper Ice Spice.
Gardner, 23, got to the Jets camp with that luxury watch. It is that shiny that caught the attention of many eyes, mainly veteran player Quinnen Williams, who soon told the star player to take it off.
“You could crack the glass,” Williams said to Gardner, as per ‘Essentially Sports‘. Following what his teammate said, Gardner took off the watch right then.
“It’s not even from the contract,” Gardner shared later on the Up & Adams Show. “That contract is all in bonds and stocks. The watch? That was marketing money.”
The watch, which he said he “got yesterday,” was the one he got with Ice Spice, showing how big Gardner is getting beyond the field. But this event showed more than his style, it showed a new cultural tone being set in the Jets locker room.
Team environment comes first
Williams’ direct but good call to Gardner shows the ethic and values of putting the team first, a mindset pushed by new lead coach Aaron Glenn. While Gardner’s star is on the rise, leaders like Williams hold the team down.
The Jets want to keep up their good work on defense, and avoid ridiculous things that could take game-focus away, like fancy stuff or social media trends that are clearly not wanted.
Teaching to remain focused
Gardner’s quick response to his teammates’ tip got him cheers and praise from fans and watchers. He kept on with drills fine, showing his structured mind is right where it needs to be, with or without wearing a fancy watch.
In a spot where your own brand can clash with team’s environment, Gardner picking camp over show was seen as a good attitude and behaviour.
Sauce Gardner might have the deals, the fame, and the fashion, but at Jets camp, doing well beats all. And if that means putting aside a big luxury watch to keep with team values, Gardner is more than keen to do so.
