Ryan Garcia‘s return to the ring was far from what he himself expected, and after a year of suspension from boxing, the Mexican fighter may have ruined a potential rematch against Devin Haney by losing by unanimous decision to Rolly Romero in one of the most important venues in boxing history.

Madison Square Garden was the scene where Garcia fell to the canvas in the second round and it was the beginning of a nightmarish night for the Mexican-American fighter, in what has been an almost unimaginable surprise.

On the same card, Haney scored an uninspiring victory over Jose Ramirez, so the much-anticipated rematch between the two was left hanging by a thread.

In the end, Garcia was gracious and acknowledged Romero’s victory by congratulating him, but he could not hide his enormous disappointment after the defeat.

Ryan Garcia’s disappointment against Madison

Garcia’s frustration was evident and he vented some of his anger against a crowd that did not fill the stands at the New York venue.

A reporter asked him: “Your opinion on the scene. I wonder, if the stadium had been full, with the fans chanting, would it have changed anything? It felt a bit quiet, it wasn’t what we expected,” and that triggered Ryan’s feelings.

“Yes, I didn’t like it at all. It looked like a training fight. You could hear everyone; it just didn’t seem authentic to me,” he said, although the fighter did not appeal to the circumstances for his defeat by stating in the post-fight press conference that: “but you know, no excuses; it is what it is”

The now sports commentator, Gabriel Rosado, posted on his social network X a feeling similar to Garcia’s by writing: “I think a big part of what failed tonight was the atmosphere. Times Square sounded great, but it just wasn’t right. The crowd plays a huge role in a boxing match. Fighters feed off the energy of the fans!”

Ryan hoped to make a big mark on his return to the ring, but he will now have to reorganize everything in his professional career, regroup with his manager and team to reassess the strategy and address the shortcomings exposed on Friday night in the ring.
