Russell Wilson wants a second chance. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback was delighted with the treatment he received from the franchise and expressed his desire to return next year, despite his disappointing end to the season.

After a dizzying start with 10 wins and three losses, the Steelers lost their last five games, including the wild-card round against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, January 11. The setback took a toll on the spirits of fans, who are calling for deep changes in the team.

Wilson did not have the best start in a Steelers uniform. The quarterback missed the first six games due to an injury, but upon his return, he won six of his first seven games, paving the way for the team to reach the playoffs.

Wilson wants to stay in Pennsylvania

After the 28-14 loss to the Ravens, Wilson showed his gratitude to the organization, saying, “It’s been such a blessing to be here. The guys that we have, the organization is truly first class.” He said that he and his wife, Ciara, fell in love not only with the team but with the city.

The Super Bowl XLVIII champion with the Seattle Seahawks made it clear that he wants to return next year with the Steelers. “It’s been truly a blessing in my life. It’s been one of the best years for me personally, to be a Pittsburgh Steeler. Obviously I hope I’m here.”

Wilson signed a one-year, $39 million contract with the Steelers. However, $37.8 million of that deal was paid by the Denver Broncos, who fired Wilson last year. Pittsburgh only had to pay the veteran $1.2 million this year, and it remains to be seen how much they will be willing to shell out to keep him for another year.

Wilson’s future with the Steelers

With the loss still fresh, head coach Mike Tomlin still doesn’t know what will happen with his quarterbacks. “I’m not ready to take a big-picture approach,” he explained but also admitted, “They’re two quality people, three quality people at the quarterback position, and I really appreciate what they poured into this.”

Backups Justin Fields and Kyle Allen became free agents as soon as the season ended, opening the door for Wilson to negotiate an extension to the one-year contract he signed last March. Wilson wants a second chance, but will the Steelers be willing to give it to him?
