For the second straight offseason, Russell Wilson has signed a one-year deal with a team looking for veteran leadership under center.
This time, he’s embracing the challenge with the New York Giants, a franchise in dire need of a steady presence at quarterback after struggling through a difficult 2024 season.
Wilson sees a star in Malik Nabers
Despite the Giants ranking near the bottom of the league in total offense last year, Wilson isn’t deterred.
In fact, he’s excited about the young talent surrounding him-especially star wide receiver Malik Nabers.
Coming off a stellar rookie campaign with 109 receptions, 1,204 yards, and seven touchdowns, Nabers has already proven he can be a game-changer.
Now, with an experienced quarterback leading the offense, Wilson believes the 21-year-old could reach new heights.
“He’s an explosive athlete,”Wilson said on Wednesday.
“Just his ability to make plays. I love Malik, man. Just watching him, his personality on the field, his demeanor. I watched this one clip-he caught this one catch against the Commanders on a shallow cross on a third down, cut back inside, got another extra 20 yards. Got hit pretty good, he kind of laid the boom or vice versa, and he got up right away, celebrating, excited about the first down, and then moved on to the next play.”
Wilson also pointed out Nabers’ ability to turn short plays into big gains, referencing an electrifying screen pass against the Colts that the rookie took 70 yards for a touchdown.
“There are only so many human beings in the world who can do that, and he is one of them,”Wilson added.
But Nabers isn’t the only receiver Wilson is eager to work with.
The veteran quarterback also had high praise for Jalin Hyatt, a 2023 third-round pick who struggled to find consistency last season.
“I just think he’s a guy that’s been untapped in terms of what he knows he’s capable of,”Wilson said.
Wilson also highlighted Darius Slayton’s ability to stretch the field and called Wan’Dale Robinson a dynamic playmaker.
“He’s like a running back every time he touches the ball,”Wilson explained.
“His ability to make people miss, his ability to get away from guys and his escapability-I’ve played with some guys like that before.”
At 36 years old, Wilson isn’t expected to single-handedly transform the Giants into contenders, but his preparation and leadership are already making an impact.
“I’m kind of a film rat,” he admitted.
“I’ve watched a lot. I’ve watched pretty much every catch of each guy… If you really want to win, it’s gotta be your lifestyle.”
With Wilson’s experience and the young talent around him, the Giants are hoping for a much-needed turnaround in 2025.
