Robert Saleh’s coaching journey is taking him back to where it all began-San Francisco. The former Jets head coach, known for building dominant defenses, is expected to rejoin the 49ers as their defensive coordinator, according to The Athletic. It’s a familiar role for Saleh, who turned the team’s defense into a powerhouse during his first stint from 2017 to 2020.
This move wasn’t always in the cards. Just days ago, Saleh was a front-runner for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coaching job, even lining up a second interview. But when the Jaguars unexpectedly pivoted to Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, Saleh pulled out of the race. The sudden change in Jacksonville’s plans cleared the way for Saleh to refocus on a return to the Bay Area.
San Francisco seems like the perfect fit for the 45-year-old coach. During his first run with the 49ers, Saleh oversaw one of the most dramatic defensive turnarounds in the league. By 2019, the 49ers were allowing just 281.8 yards per game-second-best in the NFL-and made a Super Bowl appearance. That success catapulted him into the head coaching job with the Jets.

But the New York chapter of Saleh’s career wasn’t as kind. His three seasons with the Jets were marked by struggles, leading to his firing after a 2-3 start in 2024. Saleh spent the rest of the season as an offensive consultant for the Packers, which kept him in the coaching loop while offering a fresh perspective on the game.
49ers look to Robert Saleh for redemption after defensive struggles
The 49ers, meanwhile, had their own rough patch last season. A disappointing 6-11 record and last-place finish in the NFC West prompted the team to part ways with defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen. While Sorensen was initially expected to stay in a different role, NBC Sports Bay Area reports he won’t remain with the organization, leaving a key vacancy on the coaching staff.
Bringing Saleh back feels like a move to recapture past glory. The team knows what he’s capable of, and the familiarity could make for a seamless transition. It’s also a chance for Saleh to rebuild his reputation after his stint with the Jets.
As the pieces fall into place, Saleh’s return signals the 49ers’ commitment to restoring their defensive dominance. Now, it’s up to him to turn the team’s fortunes around-again.
