Conservative influencer Riley Gaines has once again sparked controversy, this time targeting WNBA player DiJonai Carrington for her recent choice of attire and her history with basketball phenom Caitlin Clark.
Carrington, who plays for the Connecticut Sun, drew backlash after being seen wearing a shirt reading, “The F— Donald Trump Tour” before a game at Wayfair Arena in Miami. Gaines, known for her outspoken views, didn’t hold back.
A History of Feuds and Controversy
Carrington has been a divisive figure for fans of Caitlin Clark, particularly after an incident during the 2024 WNBA playoffs when Carrington accidentally poked Clark in the eye, leaving her with a black eye. Although Carrington denied intentional harm, her actions and subsequent laughter with teammates, including Marina Mabrey, added fuel to the fire.
Gaines wasted no time referencing the eye-poking incident in her critique of Carrington‘s shirt on Saturday. “What has Donald Trump done to make your life worse? Keep LeBron off the court,” Gaines quipped on X, adding a sarcastic undertone to her commentary.
The tension between Carrington and Clark‘s fan base extends beyond the playoffs. Earlier in the season, Carrington accused Clark of not doing enough to address racism associated with her name. She also called Indiana Fever fans, where Clark plays, the “nastiest” in the league.
Carrington‘s lighthearted Instagram Live video in October, where her girlfriend, NaLyssa Smith, jokingly poked her in the eye, further irked Clark supporters, as it appeared to make light of the previous incident.
Gaines vs. Carrington and Beyond
This isn’t the first time Gaines has involved herself in debates surrounding Caitlin Clark. She previously clashed with journalist Jemele Hill over comments Clark made about “White privilege” in the WNBA. Gaines accused Hill of perpetuating racial narratives, sparking a heated exchange on social media. Gaines doubled down on her criticism, mocking the notion of privilege and defending Clark‘s success as rooted in her talent rather than race.
Gaines‘ public spats are not limited to WNBA figures. She’s also engaged with high-profile liberal personalities, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Mark Cuban, using her platform to challenge progressive viewpoints and draw attention to her conservative stance.
A Polarizing Figure
Riley Gaines‘ remarks on DiJonai Carrington have added to her growing reputation as a lightning rod for controversy.
Her outspoken criticism continues to resonate with her followers, fueling debates about politics, sportsmanship, and broader societal issues.
Whether addressing Carrington‘s shirt or rekindling past disputes, Gaines shows no signs of stepping away from the spotlight anytime soon.
