Rafael Marquez is one of the most successful soccer players in Mexico’s history due to his time and titles with FC Barcelona in the first decade of this century.
After his time on the pitch as an active player, the former Mexico captain began his coaching career in Spain, where he returned to Barcelona to take charge of the reserve team.
Rafa Marquez arrives to assist Javier Aguirre
While he was at Barcelona B, Rafa Marquez received an invitation from the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) to be Javier Aguirre’s assistant for the 2026 World Cup.
But the FMF has plans for the man nicknamed Kaiser beyond the next World Cup as a host: to be the coach for the 2030 World Cup process.
With that in mind, the new coaching staff that will be in charge of El Tri for the centenary of the World Cup is also beginning to take shape.
Andres Guardado would join the Mexican national team
Who would join Marquez’s coaching staff is Andres Guardado, with whom he shared four World Cup cycles as a Mexican national team player.
Guardado was reportedly invited to join Vasco Aguirre’s staff, but the Atlas youth player is said to have declined the invitation in order to prepare as a coach with Real Betis in Spain, to be ready for the 2026-2030 project, according to the newspaper Esto.
