A peaceful family getaway quickly became a scene of chaos for Eleonora Boi and Danilo Gallinari, as what should have been an ordinary beach day in Puerto Rico ended in a way no one could have imagined.
Boi, a well-known Italian sports journalist and wife of former NBA standout Danilo Gallinari, was bitten by a shark while standing in the shallow waters of a crowded beach in Carolina.
Now recovering from her injuries, Boi is sharing her experience and gratitude for her family’s safety.
Boi, who is pregnant with the couple’s third child, described the moment on social media, writing, “It was the worst day of my life. I never thought I could get attacked by a shark and I was near the shore and on a super crowded beach. Thankfully me and my baby are fine.”
According to Puerto Rican authorities, Boi suffered a significant open wound on her thigh and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where she underwent surgery.
The operation was a success, and Boi has since been listed in stable condition.
Unlikely Danger in Familiar Waters
The attack came as a shock to everyone present, as shark bites are exceptionally rare in the region and especially in areas teeming with beachgoers.
The Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources reviewed photographs of Boi‘s injuries and stated the marks were “compatible with those of sharks,” though more analysis will be required to confirm the exact species involved.
Despite the disturbing event, officials did not issue new warnings to swimmers, instead maintaining a watchful presence on the beach.
Boi‘s response to the ordeal has been a mix of relief, humor, and gratitude. She praised Gallinari‘s calm reaction in the aftermath and joked that the shark would be “hearing from her lawyers.”
The attack left Boi unable to attend a concert in San Juan that she had planned with Gallinari, but she reassured friends and fans that her absence would be temporary, writing, “Don’t be deceived, it’s only for a little (while).”
The couple, who are already parents to a four-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son, are focusing on recovery and family as they await the arrival of their third child.
Gallinari, who spent more than a decade in the NBA before signing with Vaqueros de Bayamón in Puerto Rico’s Baloncesto Superior Nacional, has not commented publicly on the incident.
Boi, meanwhile, is staying positive and credits her husband and doctors for helping her through what she calls “a great scare.”
