Competitive sports are not for the faint of heart. It’s demanding both physically and mentally, and it can get extremely heated in certain situations. That’s what happened a couple of weeks ago, when a high school basketball player was caught throwing punches against a rival team, knocking out one opponent and temporary flooring another.

The altercation occurred on January 3rd in Calhoun, Georgia, in a game between Sonoraville High School and Rockmart High School. The aggressor was a 16-year-old athlete from Rockmart. His own teammates and others from the stands intervened before the altercation got any worse.

Why did Rockmart player punch two Sonoraville players?

That fight is now under investigation, as the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office needs to find out what exactly led to the outburst. The puncher is facing two charges of simple battery.

According to TMZ, the fight began because the first Sonoraville player “kept calling him the N-word and he lost his temper“. There has been no admission or witness statement about whether that’s what led to the altercation, but it’s certainly plausible given his strong reaction.

Neither school has made a public statement yet, although with all of this new media coverage, they surely will at some point soon.
