Joaquin Niemann is riding a wave of momentum that has seen him win four tournaments since February 2024.

The latest came after a great final round in Singapore, as he took home his second LIV Golf victory of the season after taking home the LIV Golf Adelaide just last month.

Niemann’s play has garnered plenty of attention as he continues to cement himself as one of the best players in the world. Phil Mickelson weighed in on the matter, and according to the six-time major winner, there is nobody better than Niemann right now.

It came after Torque GC, Niemann’s Golf team, stated that the Chilean is a top five player in the world at the moment.

Mickelson’s response took it one step further, as he wrote: “Top 5? Try #1”.

Fans weigh in on Mickelson’s claim

While Niemann has become a force to be reckoned with, fans on social media were quick to point out that Mickelson was forgetting about one Scottie Scheffler.

The American has arguably been the best player on the planet for he past two years. Although he hasn’t won a tournament in 2025 yet, his 2024 season included seven wins, two second-place finishes, as well as 16 Top 10 finishes in 19 starts.

There is also the fact that Niemann has played in 22 major championships in his career and has only mustered one top 20 finish – a T-16 at the 2023 Masters. He’s also missed the cut in seven of his 22 major starts.

“Pleas explain how he’s the $1 player? Clearly very talented but how can someone who has 0 top 5 finishes in a major be #1 in the world. Datagolf, which is a much better than WGR has him at 14,” wrote one fan.

Another wrote: “Absolute moronic take. Get some help phil.”

A third fan had a rather simple response, “Sure, Phil,” while showing Niemann’s record in major tournaments.
