The New York Mets continue negotiations with Pete Alonso to keep the slugger with the franchise, although there is said to be a considerable gap in negotiations at the moment, and an early deal does not appear to be on the immediate horizon.
The Mets have set out to explore other options to cover first base, and alternatives could turn to Mark Vientos, and give Brett Baty or Ronny Mauricio a chance at third base, The Post reported.
In Alonso’s favor is that he is undoubtedly one of the fans’ favorite players in Queens; however, the poor 2024 season does not make him such a coveted player.
Alonso never really seemed likely to be able to sign with the other New York team, the Yankees, as the Bombers have big right-handed hitters such as Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, who are under contract with the team for the long term.
One of the reasons why it was mentioned that Alonso could join the Yankees is his good relationship with Hal Steinbrenner. Not only did they both support the Tunnel to Towers charity, but they are both University of Florida alumni and Tampa residents.
However, in the end, Steinbrenner, as is his custom, let general manager Brian Cashman make the decision, and in the end the Yankees preferred to spend on the contracts of Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt.
Bellinger, who first chose to return to play with the Chicago Cubs, did not hide his excitement about the possibility of joining the Bronx Bombers.
The reasons Alonso has not signed with the Mets
It’s good that the Mets and Sean Manaea reached a $75 million, three-year agreement after he turned down a $67 million offer from the Athletics.
However, the re-signing of Manaea and the multi-million dollar deal with Juan Soto have been some of the reasons to prevent a quick negotiation between Alonso and the Mets.
