Paul Skenes is widely regarded as one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball, if not the very best. However, he is not particularly known for his charismatic personality, something that has once again become evident.

The young Pittsburgh Pirates ace, despite playing for a non-contending team, has already earned top honors such as the Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Award. Now, he is set to be the Opening Day starter against the New York Mets.

Paul Skenes’ very characteristic response about the Mets

One day before his start, the MLB star pitcher was asked if it was special to open the season in New York and what he thought about the Mets. He responded in his usual style, even giving more importance to the weather conditions.

“Maybe a little bit [special]. It’s kinda chilly.”

“They’re a good team. It’ll be exciting to face them,” Skenes told the media.

He is, in short, a man of few words. Or rather, he prefers to let his performance on the mound do the talking. And that is exactly what he will look to do this Thursday as he faces the Mets lineup.

Regarding his expectations for the upcoming MLB season, Skenes was very optimistic, stating that the goal is to reach the MLB playoffs and compete for the National League Central title.

“We want to win the division. We want to make the playoffs. That’s it,” Skenes said. “How we do that, who knows. Whether we win-I don’t want to put a number of games out there because that’s just putting a ceiling on us. We gotta go out there and play well every day.”

Since 2016, the Pittsburgh Pirates have remained near the bottom of their division. In fact, last season they finished last with a 71-91 record. It remains to be seen whether in MLB 2026 they can improve in a highly competitive National League Central.
