The Kansas City Chiefs are out of any chance of reaching the postseason after the loss suffered this past Sunday, December 14, corresponding to Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers, 13-16.

However, despite the pain that this brings them, it was not the only bad news they endured, because their best player of recent years and the man who returned them to elite competition and relevance, also delivering three championships, Patrick Mahomes, suffered an injury that will sideline him for the rest of the season and several additional months.

The Chiefs quarterback tore his anterior cruciate ligament and will now be evaluating options to undergo surgery as soon as possible.

An MRI has confirmed that Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes sustained a torn ACL in his left knee in today’s game. Patrick and the club are currently exploring surgical options.

Patrick Mahomes’ serious injury

It was late in the fourth quarter of the game against the Chargers, and the urgency was overwhelming so that the contest would not slip away, and they could secure a positive result. However, disaster struck.

Mahomes was looking for a receiver in the deep zone, but when he did not find one, he decided to extend the play and rolled out to the right side, avoiding pressure from defenders. It was at that moment that Da’Shawn Hand arrived from behind, tackling him, and his foot appeared to get caught as his knee twisted in a motion that ultimately caused the injury.

From the moment the severity of the problem became evident, the worst was anticipated, and unfortunately, that proved to be the case. The team confirmed an anterior cruciate ligament injury that will keep him off the field for at least nine months.

After his departure, backup Gardner Minshew entered the game and attempted to guide the team in hopes of tying the matchup, forcing overtime, and winning to remain in the postseason race; however, that was no longer possible and they are now eliminated from contention.

As someone who trains every day with Mahomes, Minshew expressed how good it feels to be by his side and to learn from one of the greatest players in NFL history. He added that it is always a pleasure to learn from those who perform at the highest level on the field.

I don’t think I’ve ever respected anybody I play with more. I’ve never seen anybody I play with give so much of themselves to the team … I have more confidence in him than anybody to come back better than ever.
